Thrapston Heritage Centre Group wins Heritage Lottery Fund Support

April 28, 2014

Thrapston Heritage Group has received £14,300 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting project led by volunteers from the local community.

The three year project focuses on the creation of an online heritage centre to showcase the area’s history.

Thrapston, together with its surrounding district, has a rich history from the Bronze Age to modern times. Its heritage includes information about the many different settlements on the site, its variety of traditions, and the impact over the centuries of change on the working and home life of ordinary people. The heritage collection is in the form of photographs, documents, maps, articles, memories, plans and numerous physical items such as costumes, crested china, books, archaeological items and reports etc.

Currently, there is nowhere for the local community to learn about and enjoy their local heritage other than through occasional exhibitions. So firstly, the project is about making it accessible to the local community and visitors through the creation of a website which will be Thrapston’s online heritage centre.

Secondly, the project will also provide opportunities for volunteers to become actively involved in its conservation and in making it accessible to all.

Key partners in the project are the local schools and the library as well as the local Historical Society.

Website content will added over the next two years and this will eventually give free access to our archives beyond that which we can achieve through our annual exhibitions.

Neil Busby, project manager, said “We are thrilled to have received the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and are confident that the project will enable our community to learn from and enjoy our local heritage.

The website was launched on Friday 18 April 2014, to take a look, visit www.thrapstonheritage.org.uk.
