The Mackintosh House and Arts Council England Renaissance Research

December 16, 2013

78 Derngate, The Mackintosh House in Northampton, has been involved in an important research project funded by The Arts Council.

The invitation for 78 Derngate to participate as a partner came from Compton Verney Art Gallery, in Warwickshire and a further partner was Banbury Museum in Oxfordshire. This is the only group in the country to be awarded a grant working across three counties.

The project involved…

qualitative and quantitative market research aiming to identify through a number of surveys and interviews how we might better our marketing strategy, and as a consequence improve visitor numbers and the visitor experience.

78 have been very heartened by the favourable feedback indicating that they are definitely doing lots of things right; and in particular the strong sense of local pride in the significance of 78 Derngate. Their volunteer guides were described as “The Unsung Heroes”.

However, 78 are not complacent and look forward to implementing some of the changes and ideas brought to them from the research team.

Recommendations include improvements to their leaflet and signage, and these are already underway. 78 will also investigate the possibility of commissioning an audio tour of the Mackintosh House for their self guiding visitors; they hope to include a downloadable version and at the same time make our website more tablet and phone friendly.
