Sulgrave Manor on World Monuments Watch list

November 13, 2013

Sulgrave Manor, in Northamptonshire has been listed on the 2014 World Monuments Watch list.

Each year the World Monuments Fund (WMF) publishes a list of sites ‘in need of timely action’, drawing international attention and support to some if the world’s most remarkable and fragile cultural heritage. Sulgrave Manor appears as only one of four UK locations chosen worldwide this year.

The 16th Century manor house, which was built by Lawrence Washington, a wool merchant and ancestor of George Washington – the first president of the United States of America – joins a diverse group of 67 sites from 41 countries and areas across the world.

World Monuments Fund considers Sulgrave Manor to be at risk because this historic house museum, like many others, struggles to meet maintenance needs from operating income.  WMF has funded a ‘heritage-led’ business plan to guide Sulgrave Manor to raise additional revenue, and will support the museum across a range of activities.
