Engaging With Schools - East Midlands Catch Up

This short and informal online session is a chance for museum staff and volunteers across the East Midlands to come together to share what they have been doing with regards to school visits and outreach sessions.

‘Ensuring Diverse Histories are Represented in Museum Learning’

Creative Learning Services have completed a review of some of their learning sessions to ensure that they represent a diverse range of histories and the resources used are representative of all cultures present at those times. With the increasingly diverse cohorts of pupils we are encountering we wanted pupils to see themselves represented in our sessions wherever possible and understand Britain’s place within the wider world.

Our review was carried out by Zaiba Patel, who will speak at the meeting about opportunities for more diversity and inclusion within museum learning sessions and handling collections, including advice on what not to include.

Zaiba is a former history teacher who works in History Education. She is due to begin a DPhil in Education at the University of Oxford where her work will focus on the role of pedagogy in decolonising the history curriculum.

Aims of the Session

  • A chance to informally talk to others in the region about the current situation with museum learning in schools.
  • Hear examples of what Creative Learning Services have been delivering to schools in the region.
  • An update from all about this current term.
  • Hear case studies from across the region

This session will be hosted by Programme Facilitator Mary Sibson, Creative Learning Services

The session will be run on the online meeting platform Zoom and details of how to join the session will be sent to delegates the day before.
