Grants

Grant funds are available to Accredited museums and those working towards Accreditation.

Museum Development offers a range of grants to help facilitate a variety of projects within museums as well as the new Recovery Grants designed to support museums in light of the Covid-19 outbreak. Here you can find information on the grants available and how you can apply. The process is straightforward. Click on the title of the below grant for more information and application forms. Contact Claire Browne, Programme Manager, should you need further guidance.

Recovery Grants

How much can you apply for: £2,000 – £10,000

Purpose of Grant: To support museums in effective reopening, meeting audience needs, and developing a sustainable offer in response to the Covid-19 crisis.

Collections Access Fund

How much can you apply for: £100 – £1,000

Purpose of Grant: To support museums to increase access to collections by improving documentation, storage and care of collections through delivery of collections training for staff and volunteers, by improving displays and information about collections and by addressing backlogs.

What the grant can fund: Training costs; purchase of documentation, conservation and storage materials and equipment; costs of working with collections specialists/conservators over a defined period to address any of the above (Museum Development can help you find specialists that can support you and appropriate trainers if needed).

For more information, please contact the Regional Collections Adviser,  Anita Hollinshead

Small Grants

How much can you apply for: £250 – £1,500 per annum

Purpose of Grant: To support small-scale projects where funding has been difficult to source. Please note urgent needs related to the current Covid-19 crisis will be prioritised.

What the grant will fund: Purchase of equipment and materials; training costs; match funding towards a purchase/ project/ short term temporary contract to advise or support an activity or development e.g. making a grant application/ running events/ project management etc.

Programme Grants:

Many of our development programmes have targeted grant support available alongside specific training and consultancy support. See the relevant programme information for details.

Is it for you?

Eligibility: Only Accredited museums are eligible for support (and those that are listed with Arts Council as ‘Working Towards Accreditation’)

Match Funding: Applicants must demonstrate a minimum 10% match funding towards the total project costs (this can be in volunteer-time where appropriate).

When is the deadline? Museums can apply at any time between 15 April 2020 and 31 January 2021. Grants are assessed at the end of each month by the MDEM grant panel and outcomes of applications communicated to museums within the first two weeks of the following month.
