The day will begin with an introduction to collections care including the museum environment and collections standards. This will be followed by a practical session exploring how to handle, pack and move museum objects safely to minimise the risk of damaging collections and injuring museum staff and volunteers. The afternoon will be spent on housekeeping including creating a cleaning kit, pest management and how to clean different materials. When to call on the services of a professional conservator will also be discussed.
The training will be led by Anita Hollinshead, Regional Collections Adviser for MDEM and will consist of a mixture of presentations, practical activities and informal discussions. All participants will receive a pack of additional information and handouts. The course is suitable for staff and volunteers who are new to the area of collections care or who would just like to refresh their knowledge.
