Plastics Surgery: Care and Conservation of Plastics

This one day course is designed for those without a background in the conservation and collection care of plastic objects in museum collections. The course will provide an introduction to plastic materials, outline a range of practical plastic identifica­tion techniques, and provide practical advice as to the storage, cleaning and labelling of historic plastic objects.

Aims and objectives: Participants will:

  • Learn about plastic as a material and basic identification techniques.
  • Have a better understanding of how plastics degrade and how this can be identified.
  • Learn preventive conservation methods for dealing with problematic plastics.

10.30 – 11.45: Understanding plastic and plastic degradation

11.45 – 12.00: Tea break

12.00 – 13.00: Plastic identification

13.00 – 14.00: Lunch

14.00 – 14.30: Inhibitive conservation strategies

14.30 – 15.45: Cleaning and labelling plastic objects

15.45 – 16.00: Questions, evaluation and close

Please note:

This course has very limited availabilty, therefore as part of the booking processed you will be asked to describe the plastics in your collection. Once this information has been reviewed your place will be confirmed via email.

This course is for delegates from Accredited museums or those working towards Accreditation only. There is a maximum of one space per an organisation.
