MDEM Trustee Development Opportunities 2022

January 24, 2022

MDEM is pleased to run a network for museum and heritage trustees from organisations of all sizes across the East Midlands. This network is for individuals who wish to meet and share best practice and access peer support from other trustees. This year has a lot in store for the Network, including exciting training, networking and development opportunities. You can join the network here. Based on feedback through our various surveys and events – we have three main areas of opportunity for you and your museums:

Succession Planning Programme:

This MDEM short programme supports museums to consider all elements of good practice in succession planning and enables them to develop a focused and realistic plan for the future. Facilitated by Heather Lomas, MDEM will provide a blend of intensive support to a cohort of 6 museums.

  • Have you considered how the board will manage if one of the trustees decides to leave?
  • Has the Covid-19 pandemic highlighted gaps on your board and the need for new expertise and experiences?
  • Do you know which skills, experience and attitudes are required to enable your museum to flourish and be sustainable?
  • Have you thought about the representation on your board, does it reflect a range of views, viewpoints and your audiences?
  • Are you fully up to date with your governing document and the rules and terms of office for trustees?

We ask all applicants to firstly read the full MDEM Succession Planning Programme Information 2022 which contains the full details of the programme, including the dates.

To apply for this opportunity, please complete the Succession Planning 2022 – EOI form by the 4th March 2022.

Collections Training for Trustees:

In partnership with Collections Trust and West Midlands Museum Development, MDEM are thrilled to be providing three online training events specifically aimed at Trustees across the Midlands, to support their understanding of collections development. These sessions are open to all trustees and no prior collections knowledge is required. For more information and to book your place, please click the below titles:

Sustainable Governance:

Roots & Branches is a collaboration between The Carbon Literacy Project, Museum Development England and Manchester Museum, supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. It aims to train and certify 1,500 people from 300 museums as Carbon Literate over the next two years and give an opportunity for museums to converse, experiment, and test new ideas for a more sustainable future.

MDEM launched the Roots and Branches programme in the region on the 11th January with an online eventGreener Museums: Taking Action Against Climate Change’ which included case studies from the National Justice Museum, Creswell Crags and Berwick Church in East Sussex along with a discussion on what steps we can all take to reduce our carbon footprint. We will be running 6 Carbon Literacy courses throughout the year, and one aimed specifically at Trustees and other focusing on areas such as industrial heritage.

Save the date: Carbon Literacy for Museum Trustees Starts 2nd August 2022

We hope to follow this with an in-person Trustee conference shortly after focusing on suitable governance and we hope to release details of this over the coming months.

We look forward to welcoming even more members to the network.
