WWI A Zeppelin Over Yarwell, Prebendal Manor, Nassington

January 21, 2014

The Prebendal Manor and Tithe Barn Museum will be mounting a new exhibition in 2014, to commemorate the participation and the sacrifices of the communities of Nassington, Yarwell, Apethorpe, Woodnewton, Wansford, and Stibbington during WWI.

The exhibition will be funded by the National Lottery with a grant of £3,400, and by Northamptonshire County Council Empowering Councillors and Community Scheme.

The title of the exhibition will be ‘A Zeppelin Over Yarwell’, an allusion to the sudden wartime appearance of a Zeppelin over the village (to the considerable consternation of the villagers) which dropped a bomb in the nearby village of Wansford. We will be telling the story of the effects on our communities on every day life, of the men who served, were wounded, came home, and of those who died in action on the battle field.

The exhibition will also be telling the story of the children’s war efforts knitting mittens for the soldiers, and in the absence of farm workers, helping to grow crops.

The Prebendal Manor team are also building a large replica Zeppelin, which we hope will hang from one of the beams in the Tithe Barn. The image above shows the model Zeppelin during the early days of construction.

The new exhibition will open on Bank Holiday Monday 5 May 2014.
