Pearls and wisdom – the Arts Council vision for the future of the Designation Scheme

August 11, 2014

Arts Council England has published Pearls and wisdom – our vision for future of the Designation Scheme for collections of national significance.

Pearls and wisdom will provide the basis for the continuing success of the Scheme, and focus attention on the existing exceptional and outstanding Designated collections.

The Designation Scheme is a mark of distinction, identifying pre-eminent collections of national significance – extensive collections which deepen our understanding of the world and humanity. The Scheme represents the Arts Council’s belief in the enduring cultural value of collections and their ability to impact upon and enrich our lives.

Alan Davey, Chief Executive, Arts Council England said:

‘This publication sets out our vision for the future of Designation. We are sure that these plans will provide the basis for the Scheme to thrive, and will focus attention on the exceptional value and potential of these outstanding collections.’

This publication marks the latest step in the review of Designation, which has included extensive consultation with stakeholders and sector partners. Revised Designation processes are currently being tested by pilot applicants, in advance of the Scheme reopening for applications in spring 2015.
