Records winners and highly commended awards in 2016 – At the Leicestershire and Rutland Heritage Awards
On the 21st July at an award ceremony hosted at the University of Leicester, the Leicestershire and Rutland Heritage Awards gave out more awards since the event started in recognition of the work of heritage sites and museums across the region. Museums, heritage sites, staff and volunteers, were celebrated at the awards ceremony hosted by BBC Radio Leicester’s Talking History presenter Dave Andrews.
The Leicestershire & Rutland Heritage Forum, in partnership with Leicestershire County Council, presented the following awards
- Best project under £750
Winner – Swannington Heritage Trust
- Best project over £750
Winner – The Boilerhouse at Foxton Locks
- Response to WW1
Highly commended – Hugglescote and Donington le Heath Heritage Society, Charnwood Museum and Western Front Association of volunteers.
Winner – Loughborough Carillon Tower and War Memorial
- Bringing heritage alive
Highly commended – Swannington Heritage Trust
Winner – Cotesbach Educational Trust
- Best research project
Highly commended – Castle Donington Museum
Winner – Ravenstone Hospital Trust
- Attracting new audiences
Highly commended – Braunstone Heritage and Archive Group and Sir John Moore Foundation
Winner – Moira Furnace Museum
- Behind the scenes
Highly commended – Swannington Heritage Trust
Winner – Ashby de la Zouch museum
- Volunteer team of the Year
Highly commended – Dorothy Goodman School Heritage Volunteers

Representatives of local authority districts that were up for awards were also present including the Chairman of North West Leicestershire District Council, The Mayor of Hinckley, the Mayor of Oadby and Wigston District Council and the Mayor of Charnwood Borough Council.
Mike Beech, chairman of Leicestershire & Rutland Heritage Forum, said “Thanks and recognition should be given to the numerous volunteers and staff who make the projects celebrated tonight possible. These awards are so important in highlighting how relevant museums and heritage sites are in their local community and the vital services they provide.
