An exciting and engaging multimedia guide for a quirky Lincolnshire museum

October 21, 2014

After considerable success elsewhere in Lincoln, ATS Heritage were asked to develop an exciting and engaging multimedia guide for the much-loved and quirky Museum of Lincolnshire Life, based in an old military barracks in Lincoln.

Taking inspiration from ‘Weekend at the Asylum’, Lincoln’s annual ‘steampunk’ festival, the family tour is led by Polly Poacher – intergalactic explorer, time adventurer and…schoolgirl, who has crash-landed her spaceship in a muddy field in Lincolnshire! Visitors are asked to help Polly to restart her broken craft – the Mary Jane – by collecting items from their tour around the Museum.

Polly was filmed in front of a green screen and her “spaceship” was actually a fully explorable 3D-model; this raw footage was combined with some very clever post-production techniques to complete the spectacular transformation. (Watch a short film of how ATS Heritage brought Polly and the Mary Jane to life).

The adult tour is led by historian and Lincolnshire native Jonathan Foyle, whose hands-on presentation and lively delivery make for for an engaging and entertaining visit. We combined his on-screen presentation with costumed re-enactments from museum staff, expert interviews as well as interactive games to provide a layered and varied tour allowing visitors to choose stories and themes that interest them.

A first for ATS was the inclusion of a second family tour, aimed at the under 7s. The ‘Find Tommy’ spotter game challenges visitors to solve clues in order to help find Tommy the toy cat who is hidden in every room.

ATS: “We thought this fascinating collection deserved a quirky response and were so pleased to find such a creative and trusting team at the Museum who encouraged us to stretch our imagination. We hope that with our presenter led tour for the adults, and completely ‘off-the-wall’ steampunk tour for family visitors we have captured the spirit of this much-loved museum.”
