How to Handle Museum Objects
The day will begin with an introduction to collections care including creating the best possible museum environment, collections standards and how to understand the properties and requirements of a range of different materials.
The training will also include sessions on how to…
- handle, pack and move objects safely, minimising the risk of damaging collections and injuring museum staff, volunteers and visitors
- lead object handling sessions with the public and young people
- create handling collections for loan to schools
- create handling collections for reminiscence sessions
The training will be led by Anita Hollinshead, Regional Collections Adviser for MDEM and will consist of a mixture of presentations, practical activities and informal discussions. All participants will receive a pack of additional information and handouts.

Who is this day for?
The course is suitable for staff and volunteers who are new to the area of collections care or who would just like to refresh their knowledge.
